Kevin Marshall Chopson is a four-time Pushcart Prize nominated poet, playwright, conceptual artist, experimental filmmaker, musician, performance artist, DADA scholar, occasional adjunct professor, guest artist and lecturer, provocateur, and the official Poet Laureate of Gallatin, Tennessee. He was born in the former steel town of Trenton, Michigan. Chopson received his B.A. in English Language and Philosophy from Eastern Michigan University. After moving to Nashville to work in the world of advertising and music, he received his M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Murray State University in Kentucky. Chopson’s poetry and essays have appeared in dozens of independent and university sponsored literary journals, magazines, and newspapers from coast to coast in the United States and abroad (United Kingdom, Russia, Thailand, Romania, and Austria). He has over one hundred poems in print and has been nominated for the prestigious Pushcart Prize four times (twice by the San Pedro River Review in Redondo Beach, California, and twice by Nazar Look in Constanta, Romania). His first poetry collection A Hollow Earth was published by the Anticus Multicultural Association in Romania in July of 2017. It contains fourteen of Chopson’s poems in English along with translations in Romanian and Crimean Tatar, one of the most ancient languages in the world. His essay on language “Toward the Sun” appears in the Tatar journal Historical Ethnology, published in Russia in 2018 (don’t hold that against him). Long interested in the visual and audio arts as well, Chopson is currently engaged in presenting his poetic vision – a mash-up of semiotics, DADA-ism, fluxus, surrealism, postmodernism, and experimental phenomenological musings – in performance art, conceptual art, audio recordings, film, theater, “manipulated” photography, collage, lectures, consultations, and other multi-media formats. His unique show DADA-DADA-BRÜLLT-BRÜLLT was selected to be part of Nashville’s Kindling Arts Festival in August of 2021. DADA-DADA-BRÜLLT-BRÜLLT / une variante was also performed at the Gallatin Public Library in Tennessee in January of 2022 and the Ventnor Fringe 2022 Festival, on the Isle of Wight in the U.K., in July of 2022. The latest iteration of his DADA work — Master Chopson’s Ne0-Alt Pop-uP DADA/Fluxus Extravaganza — continues to attract attention everywhere it lands.
